  • 3/4 cup cups Black cocoa powder (sifted)
  • 2 tsp teaspoons Baking soda
  • 1 tsp teaspoons Baking powder
  • 1 tsp teaspoons Salt
  • 2 eggs Eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 cup cups Buttermilk (room temperature)
  • 1 cup cups Coffee (hot)
  • 1/2 cup cups Canola oil
  • 2 tsp teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 2 cups cups Fresh blackberries
  • 2 tbsp tablespoons White granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp tablespoons Fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tsp teaspoons Lemon zest
  • 1 stick Cinnamon stick
  • 1/4 cup cups Water
  • 1 tbsp tablespoons Cornstarch
  • 8 oz ounces Cream cheese (softened)
  • 1/2 cup cups Unsalted butter (softened)
  • 3 cups cups Powdered sugar (sifted)
  • 1 cup cups Black cocoa powder (sifted)
  • 1/4 tsp teaspoons Salt
  • 1 tsp teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • Chocolate skulls
  • Fresh blackberries
  • Dried rose petals

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, black cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, combine sugar, eggs, buttermilk, coffee, oil, and vanilla extract. Mix well.
  4. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until smooth. Pour batter into prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes.
  5. Prepare the blackberry compote by cooking blackberries, sugar, lemon juice, zest, cinnamon, and cornstarch in water until thickened.
  6. Assemble the cake by layering cake rounds with compote and frosting made from cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, cocoa powder, salt, and vanilla extract. Decorate with chocolate skulls and fresh blackberries.
